HOPE in times like this
At the HOPE Centre we continue to experience an increase in calls and emails from individuals or families reaching out for support due to the significant rise in mental health concerns. The isolation, uncertainties of the future, lack of routine, and stresses as a result of the pandemic have affected everyone.
For different reasons people are experiencing challenges. Although no age is exempt from what is happening, we are seeing an increase specifically with children and youth needing our services.
Pre-pandemic, the young people we worked with were exposed to different challenges and issues including: family breakdown, unhealthy relationships, academic and social pressure, poverty, violence and neglect. These challenges and concerns are still present, however the pandemic has meant there are also new additional stressors.
Studies suggests that 1 out 5 young people struggle with a mental health issue, but only 1 out of 4 receive support. There are different reasons why young people do not receive support. The stigma attached to therapy or mental health can sometimes prevent people from reaching out. Finances can also be a barrier to receive the support needed. At Eagles Nest we work hard to create awareness about mental health and make support accessible to everyone by providing free services or at minimal cost.
There are many benefits for young people receiving therapy. The early years are an important time for preventing mental illness and lessening it’s impact in the future.
Therapy sessions help equip children and youth with tools and strategies to cope and manage their circumstances. They also have the opportunity to be heard and for some to find their voice for the first time as they put words to their story and feelings. As they discover their own strengths and potential, there is also increase in self-worth.
This past year, a registered therapist who specializes in children and youth joined our team. I am thankful that Eagles Nest has been able to respond to the increased need for this age group. We are offering individualized counselling sessions for children and youth and are planning to offer support groups for young people in the future.
Therapy does not look, sound or feel the same for everyone. However at Eagles Nest we do believe that for everyone therapy can mean steps towards a healthier future.
