Being An Encourager
Did you ever think about what little effort it takes to encourage someone? It takes minimal time but can have lasting results. You may already be rationalizing away the idea that you could be an encourager because the gift of encouragement is NOT one of your spiritual gifts. In Romans 12: 6 to 8 the Apostle Paul speaks about the use of the gifts we are given. In verse 8 it says: “if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.” All these gifts have a form of encouragement woven within them.
My thoughts were drawn towards the theme of encouragement when I received in the mail (yes, believe it or not, snail mail) a beautiful note which greatly encouraged me. A busy pastor had taken the time to jot a few lines which spurred me on in my work!
Each day, we can choose to be an encourager. Perhaps a small thing, like telling someone that the sweater they are wearing brings out the beautiful colour of their eyes. One simple statement can bring a smile to someone’s face. I would like to say blessed are those who encourage because a blessing always comes back around. Whether we send an e-mail, write a card, make a phone call or tell someone they are doing a great job, it only takes a small amount of time and a little thoughtfulness on our part. Remember the line “I get by with a little help from my friends.” Encouraging one another is a good way to help others get by especially during these difficult days.
“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing” (1 Thessalonians 5:11).
