Women’s Pickleball
bringing exercise and community together
Hi, I’m Maddy Heise, currently a high school student who has been attending Compass Point Bible Church for around 9 years!! I am passionate about many things such as reading, writing, music, working with children, but most recently, pickleball!
Growing up, I’ve never considered myself an athletic individual, but discovering racket sports has been a game-changer, and I know it can be for you too! Pickleball is fairly easy to learn and play, no matter how athletic you are, and I am so excited to be able to share my love for the sport with the community!
Can you tell us what got you interested in Pickleball and why do you like playing it?
I first began to love pickleball around a year ago (wish I had even sooner!!) and started playing it weekly about 7 months ago. I was invited by my mom (who will be supporting me in this initiative) who was invited by a neighbour to a ladies pickleball night at a gym nearby.
Saying yes to that invite was one of the best things that has happened to me! Each week, pickleball night was the highlight! It builds community (and maybe a little friendly competition- ha!) and friendships, all while keeping your body moving! What’s not to love?
Ever since, I have been growing my love for and experience in playing pickleball. A couple weeks into playing regularly, God planted the idea in my mind to bring the same idea of ladies pickleball to Compass Point.
As I began to explore this idea, it became clear that God was equipping me with the tools, people, and mindset to take on a bigger role in my community.
Why is it important to bring Pickleball to the church through the Grassroots initiative?
As mentioned, I felt inclined to take on initiative and leadership in my community. Although this is usually out of my comfort zone, I feel confident that God will use me to do incredible things and lead me further into a faith that turns outwards and impacts the people around me.
Compass Point is a great way for me to utilize my talents and passions with its large space and resources. Bringing pickleball to Compass Point is important to me because I want to bring the joy, community, and safe space that my previous ladies pickleball group has brought me to my very own church, Compass Point and the surrounding community!
It is my biggest hope that people who attend this pickleball group will experience these three things:
A newfound sense of community that is welcoming, encouraging, and supportive of one another.
New relationships (especially inter-generational) with people of all ages and backgrounds that can develop into Godly friendships that extend beyond the court and into daily lives.
A new, easy, “feel-good” way to move your body, stay fit, and have fun in a way that includes everybody.
